World Green Economy Summit concludes with 8th Dubai Declaration

Dubai, UAE, 29 September 2022: Under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the 8th World Green Economy Summit (WGES) concluded today in Dubai. It was organised by the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO), Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. The summit was held under the theme ‘Climate Action Leadership through Collaboration: The Roadmap to Net-Zero’. A large number of ministers, experts, decision-makers, officials, representatives of institutions, and the academic community from around the world took part in the Summit.

The summit concluded with HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, MD&CEO of DEWA, and Chairman of WGEO, announcing the 8th Dubai Declaration.

“First, I extend my gratitude and appreciation to His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, for his generous patronage of the World Green Economy Summit, and to His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, for inaugurating the Summit. I also thank everyone who contributed to the success of the summit, which was organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, the World Green Economy Organization, and the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy,” said Al Tayer.

Al Tayer emphasized that the World Green Economy Summit since its launch, has succeeded in mobilising global efforts to promote climate action. This year’s theme ‘Climate Action Leadership through Collaboration: The Roadmap to Net-Zero’ reflects the need for concerted global efforts to combat climate challenges, which affect the entire world.

Over two days, the summit featured many panel discussions, seminars, and high-level meetings with ministers, officials and specialists in various fields of the green economy from the government and private organisations from around the world. At the conclusion of WGES, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer launched the 8th Dubai Declaration, which emphasised the importance of comprehensive partnerships and the need to mobilise resources to support low-emission development initiatives and the transition to a green economy. It has called for promoting the efforts and contribution of the public and private sectors in exploring ways to enhance energy efficiency and reduce emissions in the energy systems, mobilise investments in support of green growth and sustainability, in addition to empowering the youth to make positive and effective change. The 8th Dubai Declaration commended the UAE Government, which has developed a pioneering world-class model that balances economic growth, sustainability, and protecting the environment.

Recognising the urgency of addressing the catastrophic impact of climate change not just on the environment but also on our collective socio-political and economic well-being for current and future generations;

Stressing the need for greater collaborative action at local, regional and global levels from various stakeholders in the international community towards more strategic initiatives and impactful action that focus on mitigation, adaptation and climate finance;

Realising the importance of capacity building, sharing knowledge, and technological solutions in addition to financial and other resources to support the implementation of the Paris Agreement and UN’s SDGs 2030, focused on ongoing as well as planned initiatives;

Acknowledging the need for greater support in developing countries and underserved communities around the world;

We emphasise to:

·         Foster and encourage more inclusive partnerships among governments, businesses and civil society to formulate definitive strategies as well as sustained action on the ground;

·         Mobilise resources to support long-term low-emissions development initiatives and the transition to the green economy and climate resilient development, especially in the least developed countries and small island developing countries;

We commit to:

·         Strengthen the World Green Economy Organization (WGEO) as an international platform to promote strategic partnerships and international cooperation, capacity building, knowledge-sharing and technology transfer to design, promote and implement the Nationally Determined Contributions and Long-term low emission development initiatives at the global level.

·         Enable the Global Alliance on Green Economy which was announced at the World Green Economy Summit 2022 and supported by the World Green Economy Organization to play its instrumental role in promoting the climate action, food security and climate resilient development. We express our appreciation to the UAE Government, which has developed a pioneering world-class model that balances economic growth, sustainability, and protecting the environment and the climate.

·         Track and determinedly pursue commitments to the goals of the Paris Agreement and encourage greater participation and involvement in the agenda and action plan of COP 27 in Egypt this year and COP 28 in the UAE next year;

We call for:

·         Greater efforts and action in both the public and private sectors to decarbonising energy networks.

·         Mobilising Investment for green growth, building climate resilience and sustainability into existing value chains, and empowering the youth to drive a positive and impactful change.

·         Enhancing Research & Development and boosting utilisation of disruptive technologies of the fourth industrial revolution to accelerate combating climate change and boost transitioning into green economy.
